A body scrub is a popular treatment that can be described as a facial for the whole body. Body scrubs hydrate and exfoliate the skin. During a body scrub, the specialist will use an abrasive material like salt, sugar, rice bran or coffee grounds. The abrasive will often be mixed with massage oil and an aromatic. Body scrubs using salt are often called salt scrubs, sea salt scrubs or salt glows.
What Happens During a Body Scrub?
During a body scrub, the client will lay face down on a massage table that is covered with a sheet, towel or thin piece of plastic. Alternatively, they may lie on a special table with a Vichy shower overhead. A Vichy shower, for the record, is a set of five to seven showerheads used in treatments like body wraps or body scrubs.
Once the client is situated, the therapist will start gently rubbing the exfoliant on their back, feet and the backs of their arms and legs. They will then have the client turn over so they can apply the exfoliant to the other side. After the therapist is finished, the client will take a shower to remove all the granules of the scrub.
If the client is lying on a wet table, the therapist will shower them with either a Vichy shower or a hand-held shower head. Some therapists use steamed towels instead of showers to remove the exfoliant. After the client has had their shower, the therapist will apply body oil or lotion.
Body scrubs can be offered on their own or as part of a body wrap. Body scrubs can sometimes also be combined with a massage. Most therapists will do the body scrub first, because it stimulates the client, while a massage relaxes them. Body scrubs don’t involve any invasive procedures and they don’t require the client to assume any odd or uncomfortable positions.
What is a Body Wrap?
A body wrap is a treatment that is also known as a body mask or a body cocoon. The client’s body is slathered with a substance and then wrapped in a sheet or blanket for an amount of time. Body wraps that use shea butter or rich lotions are designed to hydrate the skin, while those using clay, mud, seaweed or algae are detox treatments that stimulate the body’s metabolism to encourage it to get rid of toxins.
