Sunless tanning involves the use of products that enables the client to mimic a tan. Many people like the look of a tan, but they don’t want to risk skin cancer getting one. Sunless tanning products come in two main types: bronzers that can be washed off like ordinary make-up and sunless tanners that actually dye the client’s skin. The latter last until the exposed skin cells slough off.
What is Airbrush Tanning?
All sunless tanning products contain an ingredient called dihydroxyacetone (DHA). It mixes with proteins in the epidermis to produce a fake tan. As the client sheds dead skin cells, the tan fades. Sunless tanning products can take the form of lotions, gels, mousses or sprays. At New Beauty Wellness, we use the form of a spray, or fine mist, and this airbrush tanning treatment takes place in our office to ensure optimal results.
Does the Client Have to Prepare in Any Way?
Yes. The most important step in preparing for an airbrush tanning session is exfoliating one’s skin the night before. The tan only lasts as long as it takes for the skin to shed dead skin cells. Removing the dead skin cells beforehand could extend the life of the tan. Aside from that, the client needs to be clean. They need to have showered the night before, and they must not use make-up, deodorant or anything else that might interfere with the spray.
What Happens During Airbrush Tanning?
During treatment sessions, the esthetician will tell the client to assume one of several different positions and then spray them. They will tell the client to assume another position and spray again. They will repeat the process until the client’s entire body, or the desired area, is covered with tanner. Counting drying time, the process generally takes under half an hour.
It typically takes six to eight hours for the color of the tan to fully develop. The client should therefore not shower or use soap or moisturizer during this time. Doing so can reduce the life of the tan.
How Safe is This?
Quite safe. DHA was approved by the FDA around 40 years ago. Many of the products used in airbrush tanning have also been endorsed by the Mayo Clinic, the American Academy of Dermatology, the Skin Cancer Foundation and the American Medical Association.
